What is it?
Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) is a Fern plant extract that protects skin from harmful effects of the sun.
What does it do?
PLE reduces UV damage at the cellular and molecular level to reduce risk of sunburn, skin cancer, and aging.
Are there any side effects?
In most studies, side effects were not observed or deemed negligible at doses ranging 120mg – 1080mg daily.
Can children take PLE?
Because it is classified as a supplement, not a drug, the FDA does not regulate this ingredient and we do not have data from large safety studies in children. In 1 small study looking at the benefit of PLE in children with atopic dermatitis, it was well tolerated
Who should take it?
Those at risk for skin cancer (everyone)
Anyone who spends time outdoors, has ever experienced sunburn, has a hard time complying 100% with sunscreen
Those concerned with aging due to sun exposure
Athletes, fishermen, skiers, snowboarders, bikers, runners, swimmers, beach-goers, surfers
Patients on medications that make them sensitive to sun (blood pressure meds, aspirin, Accutane, doxycycline, tretinoin cream, etc)
Patients with conditions aggravated by sun
